In 2019, we set out to build recurring commerce in Europe, aiming to make consumption more sustainable. Since then, Shopify has become one of the most exciting and fast-growing e-commerce platforms, loved by both us and our merchants.
Throughout this journey, we’ve learned a lot about Shopify’s subscription ecosystem—its strengths and limitations.
One major challenge for merchants has been the lack of support for local payment methods in Shopify’s native checkout, which are necessary for making subscriptions work well.
That’s why we’re thrilled to announce that we're working on a new native integration, designed to simplify subscriptions and power localized payment methods.
Over the past few weeks, we’ve focused on turning this integration into a reality for European Shopify merchants. Our goal has been to make sure that you and your customers enjoy the best experience possible.
With local payment methods soon more accessible, subscriptions are set to become even easier. This deeper integration in the Shopify ecosystem isn’t just a welcome improvement; it’s a big step toward our mission of shifting commerce for good by changing how people consume.
As we streamline localized cross-border payments, we‘re driving subscription growth. And this is only the beginning of expansion across Europe.
So, without further ado, let’s jump right in.
We’re always looking for ways to expand local payment options, making it easier for you, as a Shopify merchant, to provide a seamless checkout experience for your customers.
With iDEAL payments soon available for Mollie customers, your customers can enjoy an even smoother experience, with recurring payments conveniently handled through SEPA Direct Debit.
No more separate checkouts or custom integrations to enable subscriptions—your customers will all have the same consistent, hassle-free shopping experience.
Plus, you can continue leveraging all the great benefits of the Shopify Checkout that you know and love.
Take a closer look at all the action in the video below, presented by our Chief Technology Officer, Michiel Sikkes.
We’ve deepened our integration with Shopify customer accounts to make subscription management better for your customers.
Previously, Shopify customer accounts and the Firmhouse customer portal were two separate worlds, but this update brings them together seamlessly.
As a first step, we are introducing the ability to log in with Shopify customer accounts. So, when a customer is logged into Shopify, they’ll be automatically logged into the Firmhouse customer portal. That way, no additional login steps are required.
This sets the stage for the first widget that will enable your customers to add products to their active subscription, straight from the product page in Shopify.
Our Shopify customer account integration is now live and rolling out to our first group of merchants. We are ready to start onboarding you today.
Our first web component is an embeddable widget that lets your subscribers browse your store and easily add items to their next shipment directly from product pages on Shopify.
If a product is already included in a customer’s upcoming delivery, the widget will display this information and offer them the option to adjust quantities or remove the item from their order.
This is only the beginning—bringing the subscription experience directly into the Shopify storefront allows customers to better manage their subscriptions while also providing you with more upsell and cross-sell opportunities.
Heads up: Shopify web components require the Shopify customer account integration to be set up and working.
We are excited to bring you more great updates soon that make the Shopify integration and support even better. This deeper integration leverages our proven technology for running and scaling subscription businesses across Europe.
And while we already support more local payment methods on our recurring commerce platform, we will continue expanding our options (such as iDEAL) in the future.
Rest assured, all processes for dunning, handling chargebacks, and fraud protection are still in place and will continue to work seamlessly.
Stick around for more announcements and updates in future posts. We are excited to get you up and running in the near future.
